Juan Pablo Montoya Wins Talladega Pole

Juan Pablo Montoya has captured the pole position for Sunday's AMP Energy Juice 500 at Talladega Superspeedway with a lap of 184.640 miles per hour.

It was Montoya's third pole of the year. He also won the top starting spots at New Hampshire and Indianapolis in July.

"We always run really good here," Montoya said afterwards. "We always have good race cars. Right now, (we'll) get ourselves a good pit stall for the race and then see what happens. We'll be ok. Talladega is more about how the car is going to be in the draft and everything. We came with the same thing we had here in the spring, we ran really well. Both (Earnhardt Ganassi) cars ran really well."

Clint Bowyer won the second starting spot with a lap of 184.498 mph. Kurt Busch was third, followed by the unlikely Joe Nemechek and Jeff Gordon.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualified sixth, followed by some other lesser-ranked drivers, including Dave Blaney in seventh, Ryan Newman, Casey Mears and Sam Hornish Jr.

Denny Hamlin Gets Serious as Chase Crunch Arrives

Making eye contact with reporters, speaking in a strong voice, gesturing for emphasis, Denny Hamlin all but declared the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship was his to lose in the hour after he won the final regular season race Sept. 11 at his home track in Richmond, Va.

His body language seemed to challenge anyone to believe differently. And five races into the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup, Hamlin is every bit on track to back up the words.

He felt he could win or contend on every single of the 10 Chase tracks and, in the past, it might have seemed more bravado than measured confidence from the NASCAR "young gun."

But this is a different Hamlin. The 2010 Hamlin model says the proper championship mindset has at last matched his considerable talent. And he is doing everything he needs to do to give four-time defending series champ Jimmie Johnson a real run for a fifth.

Johnson holds a 41-point edge over second place Hamlin entering Sunday's race at the half-mile Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, where the Tums Fast Relief 500 is being billed as mano y mano -- a heavyweight fight of sorts between Hamlin and Johnson, who have combined to win every race there in the last four years.

"People would think so, I would think so,'' Hamlin said of comparing the race to a title fight. "I feel like if it is mano y mano, we've been in a lot of green-white-checkers where we've been on the front row together, so it should be interesting.''

Dodge Grand Caravan

Dodge has just given us some images and details on the new 2011 Grand Caravan. For some time, the Grand Caravan has been less than grand, but Dodge hopes that this newest version will change that and put them in front of Honda and Toyota in the minivan game.

The van will pack Dodge?s new Pentastar V6, as well as a revised suspension that Dodge hopes will make the van more pleasing to drive. We haven?t been told what was changed, but the press release says that ?virtually everything? was updated.

The motor is the 3.6-liter V6 and that will be connected to a six-speed automatic. That motor will replace all three of the previous motors. The V6 puts out 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the same numbers as the new Avenger.

While we aren?t sure if a V6 only van will sell well, we are sure that buyers will love the new interior with top-notch materials, better seats, and redesigned gauges. The outside of the Grand Caravan will get some LED taillights and a new front fascia.

We’ll have to wait and see how the van compares with the new offerings from Honda and Toyota, which have been stellar.

Hit the jump to see the press release.

My Japanese Grand Prix review

Hello everyone, what another enthralling weekend we have just had at the famous figure-of-eight track at Suzuka.

Red Bull were dominant in Japan as Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber secured a one-two finish, coming home ahead of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, while the McLaren duo of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button slipped back in the title hunt.

I went to the Brooklands Museum to film my thoughts on the race and you can watch it here.

Timeline: Kasey Kahne's First Seven Years in NASCAR

Kasey Kahne, who was released Wednesday night as the driver of the Richard Petty Motorsports No. 9 Budweiser Ford, came on the scene in 2003, when RPM was still Evernham Motorsports.

In the seven years since, he's racked up 11 victories, including an impressive six victories in 2006.

But Kahne was a lame duck at RPM, and he and longtime crew chief Kenny Francis had previously announced their intentions to race for Red Bull Racing in 2011 as a stopover point before Kahne's move to Hendrick Motorsports' No. 5 car in 2012.

David Pearson, Bobby Allison Lead NASCAR's Second Hall of Fame Class

Driving champions David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Lee Petty, Ned Jarrett and team owner Bud Moore were named as the second class of inductees into NASCAR's Hall of Fame on Wednesday afternoon during a ceremony at the Grand Hall of the year-old shrine in downtown Charlotte.

Representing markedly different eras, the new class is comprised of some of the sport's most recognizable names.

Three-time Cup champion David Pearson, who many thought would enter the Hall during its inaugural class, was the first name announced by NASCAR Chairman Brian France (right).

Legendary driver Bobby Allison, the 1983 Cup champ and three-time winner of the Daytona 500, was the next name revealed, followed by the Petty family patriarch and inaugural Daytona 500 winner Lee Petty; Ned Jarrett, a two-time Cup champ (1961, '65) and father of 1999 Cup driving champ Dale Jarrett; and Bud Moore, a three-time Cup champion mechanic and team owner.

The class -- selected by a 52-person voting panel plus a fan internet vote in a four-hour voting session Wednesday morning -- will be inducted in May of 2011.

Gran Turismo 5 won't be home for Christmas?

Gran Turismo 5 box artGran Turismo 5 continues to tantalize while enraging keeping us waiting with bated breath, for that one day when we can place the disc into our Playstation 3. The game was supposed to be released on November 2nd, but an announcement on the US Playstation blog said it was pushed back... again. The only clue to the new release date was that it would be available this holiday season. What does that mean exactly? Apparently it means that you will have to shake off your hangover and pick up a copy of the game on New Years Day... or Eve... or the day after New Years Day. Honestly, we're not entirely sure and we don't think Polyphony Digital is either.

Best Buy, Gamestop and Amazon.com have updated their respective pre-order pages to reflect a new release date. Amazon.com lists 12/31/10, Gamestop has 01/01/11 and Best Buy shows a date of 01/02/11. For some reason, Target believes the game will be available on November 1st, which is awfully hopeful. Wal-Mart has apparently given up listing a release date, which may be the wisest move of all. Thanks for the tip, Billfred!

Your classic grand prix - race 16

The 1993 Japanese Grand Prix is the selected race in the latest edition of our classic Formula 1 series.

Last week, we asked readers to tell us which of three great races they would most like to see - the 1990, 1993 and 1995 Japanese Grands Prix - and the overwhelming choice was Ayrton Senna's victory in 1993.

The full 'Grand Prix' highlights programme broadcast on the BBC at the time is embedded below, with the shorter highlights of it and the other races linked underneath. There are also short and long highlights of Sebastian Vettel's victory in an incident-packed Suzuka race last year, too.

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions. If you're reading via RSS, you'll need to visit the blog to access this content.

Because of the Commonwealth Games, the classic races will not be shown on the red button, either on digital and satellite or on Freeview.

I have to say that I was surprised by just how popular the 1993 race was - it outdid the other two choices by something like five to one.

The 1993 race witnessed a great drive by Senna, and was full of action and intrigue both during the race and afterwards, but I have to say I thought the famous crash between Senna and Alain Prost at the start in 1990 would be the most popular choice.

There was all the drama of the start, Nigel Mansell putting paid to his chances by breaking his Ferrari's driveshaft with an over-exuberant getaway from a tyre stop, and the unusual podium of two Benettons and local hero Aguri Suzuki.

The 1995 race also made a strong case for itself - a superb drive from Michael Schumacher, comedy retirements from Williams drivers Damon Hill and David Coulthard (although it's fair to say the team's no-nonsense technical director Patrick Head wasn't laughing) and a battling drive from Ferrari's Jean Alesi before his retirement (also with a driveshaft failure).

Having said that, it is hard to argue against 1993. It was one of Senna's great wet-weather victories after a race-long battle with arch-rival Prost and there was the sub-plot of Eddie Irvine's electrifying grand prix debut.

Drafted in by Jordan for the last two races of the year, the Northern Irishman qualified an excellent eighth, and used his knowledge of Suzuka gleaned from three years in Japanese Formula 3000 to pass Schumacher and Hill at the start.

Later in the race, while battling with Hill, Irvine had the temerity to unlap himself from Senna. And when the great Brazilian, a little the worse for wear, confronted Irvine about it after the race, he did not find the novice as apologetic as expected - the two got into a heated argument which ended with Senna punching Irvine.

A number of you asked on my last blog whether there was film of this argument. There isn't. But the journalist Adam Cooper was in the room with Irvine at the time, and he recorded the whole thing. A transcript of the row was published in Autosport magazine - for which both Cooper and I were working at the time - and you can read it here.

There were also questions about why we had not chosen the 1996 race, when Hill clinched the world title.

The answer is in the name of this series - classic grands prix. Hill is a popular man, and with good reason, but in no way could that race be called an all-time classic in comparison with others we have chosen.

To recap, the title battle had distilled by the time of Japanwhich was the last race of the season, into a fight between Williams team-mates Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.

Hill led by nine points going into the race - which meant the only way Villeneuve could be champion was if he won and the Englishman was out of the points.

Villeneuve increased the tension by qualifying on pole, ahead of Hill, but his chances were effectively ruined within seconds of the green light, when the Canadian made a poor start and dropped to sixth, behind Hill, Benetton's Gerhard Berger, Mika Hakkinen's McLaren, Schumacher's Ferrari and Irvine's Ferrari.

Villeneuve managed to get past Irvine, but was still in only fifth place when he retired when a rear wheel came off going into Turn One with 15 laps to go. Hill, meanwhile, led untroubled from the start, going only as fast as he needed to, keen to conserve his car.

A popular result, yes, especially in Britain. But a classic grand prix it was not.

Clement Desalle blog

The 2010 season has finished with my second podium for Team Belgium at the Motocross of Nations. As I said after the event it feels like I have been second a lot this year! Thunder Valley was still a good experience though and I enjoyed racing in America. Getting to the Motocross of Nations meant passing a tough couple of weeks.

I crashed on Saturday at Lierop for the second-to-last GP and while my teeth and lip seemed to be the priority my backside was also in a lot of pain. I knew Sunday's motos would be very tough but then Sunday evening my butt was incredibly sore and the bruising was unbearable. Monday was very long. I hardly slept and could do nothing for the few days until going to Italy. I couldn't even dress myself. I knew that the Italian Grand Prix at Fermo was going to be so difficult, especially when I saw the hard-pack and all the jumps!

The New Lamborghini Miura II Hasn't Gone Over Well With Volkswagen

Have you ever wrote a paper that you thought was just brilliant and proceeded to hand it in to your teacher, professor, or boss just so they could turn around and tell you they thought it was terrible? That really hurts doesn?t it?

Well, Jorge Antonio Fernandez Garcia, also known as John Ferci, had that exact thing happen to him. The designer who works for Lamborghini Latinoamerica SA just created the new Miura II, and even though we think it looks pretty good, the big bosses at the Volkswagen Group thought otherwise.

The design follows the Altar and the Coatl, which came from the same manufacturer who had an agreement with Lamborghini in 1995. Turns out, the current owner of the company, Volkswagen, aren?t too fond of those last two designers, so we can only imagine their distaste for the new Miura II.

Still, we like it, just like we like the other two. After all, Lamborghinis are about flash and gaudy looks, right?

The New Lamborghini Miura II Hasn't Gone Over Well With Volkswagen originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 18 October 2010 22:00 EST.
