MotoGP Build Up to Sachsenring

There will be no doubt that Jorge Lorenzo will want to get off to the best possible start at the Sachsenring following his race win at Mugello a fortnight ago after taking over Dovizioso and Stoner. He will be looking to cut the MotoGP 2011 cahmpionship lead that Stoner has at the minute. The battle this weekend will be between these two. i think that Simoncelli will carry on with his form and crash after doing well last time out. Or has he finally got rid of his demons? Will he finish the race and maybe get the podium that he deserves.

The Yamahas have become strong in the past two races with Spies winning at Assen and Lorenzo at Mugello. They have brought a few little bit of extra tech to help them out in the battle with Repsol Honda. The Ducati's have not been on the pace even though Rossi has been running the GP11.1 bike (next years chassis with an 800cc engine in). Hayden has not been able to do this as he had already used too many of his engines for the season. The riders get a limit fo six engines for the season, averaging three races each. Rossi is on to his fifth engine of the season.

Another team that is doing well in the face of adversity is the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team. Both of its riders had suffered collarbone breakages but getting back on the bikes the following race. Crutchlow will be wanting to get the issues of tyre pressures sorted for the race on Sunday. Edwards will be looking to bag himself some more points with his collarbone hopefully fully healed now.

The Repsol Honda riders of Stoner and Dovizioso will be looking to be near to the front of the pack come Sunday as they are most weekends. Pedrosa will be looking to get higher up the order than he did in Mugello now that he is back from his double collarbone break.

Vitantonio Liuzzi - classic F1

Vitantonio Liuzzi is the latest driver to choose his five all-time favourite grands prix for BBC Sport's classic Formula 1 series.

The HRT driver, who elected to stay in F1 for a seventh season this year with a back-of-the-grid team rather than look for a more competitive drive elsewhere, certainly knows his F1 history. The Italian's selection comprises five all-time classic events.

Vitantonio Liuzzi

Liuzzi decided to join HRT this year to ensure he kept his name alive in F1

The 1979 French Grand Prix

A race famous for what Liuzzi describes as the "amazing fight" between Ferrari's Gilles Villeneuve and Renault's Rene Arnoux over second place in the final three laps, as the two men passed and re-passed each other, occasionally banging wheels in perhaps the most frenetic three laps of racing in F1 history.

The race also marked Renault's first win in F1, courtesy of Jean-Pierre Jabouille, and the first for a car with a turbocharged engine - the type of power-plant that is returning to the sport in the new 'green' F1 from 2014.

The 1982 Monaco Grand Prix

This race featured perhaps the most chaotic closing stages in F1 history, with five different leaders vying for the win, and was described by Murray Walker at the time as "certainly the most exciting, eventful grand prix I have ever seen".

Long-time leader Alain Prost crashed his Renault at the chicane in a late shower of rain, leaving Brabham's Riccardo Patrese in front and on course for his first F1 win. But he, too, was caught out on the slippery track, spinning just three-quarters of a lap later than Prost, this time on the hill down from Mirabeau to Loews.

Patrese managed to bump-start his car but only after being passed for the lead by Ferrari's Didier Pironi, who then stuttered to a halt, out of fuel, in the tunnel. That should have given the lead to Alfa Romeo's Andrea de Cesaris but he, too, had stopped with an empty tank, even before he got to the site of Patrese's spin. And Williams driver Derek Daly, who could also have moved up, had stopped with a broken driveshaft. All that meant Patrese crossed the line in the lead, even though, as Liuzzi points out "he didn't know he'd won".

The 1989 Japanese Grand Prix

A familiar choice, this is a race that is central to the legend of Ayrton Senna and a key event in his bitter feud with arch-rival Prost, then his team-mate at McLaren. Prost led for much of the race but was caught by Senna in the closing stages. When the Brazilian went for a pass at the chicane, the two men collided.

Prost knew he was world champion if both men retired. But as he climbed out of the car, Senna decided to continue. He pitted to replace a damaged nose cone and recovered to pass Benetton's Alessandro Nannini for a brilliant win.

Senna was later controversially disqualified, leading to the extraordinary development of McLaren appealing against the result of a race that had given the world title to one of their drivers. The appeal was unsuccessful.

The 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix

Like Monaco 1982, another chaotic finish in the rain, with perhaps an even more extraordinary result. Heavy downpours led to the retirements of many leading drivers, including world champion Michael Schumacher. And the race was brought to a premature end when first Mark Webber crashed his Jaguar at high speed coming on to the pit straight and then Fernando Alonso's Renault ploughed into the debris.

The result hinged on who had crossed the line at the point the race was stopped. Timekeepers initially handed the win to McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen but Jordan were convinced their man Giancarlo Fisichella had won. Jordan appealed, successfully, and Fisichella was named as the winner, Raikkonen handing him the trophy at a little ceremony before the following race, the San Marino GP at Imola.

The 2005 Japanese Grand Prix

Arguably the best grand prix there has ever been - and one we dealt with when Mark Webber made his selections last week.

As always, we pick one 'feature' race, so this time we have gone for Monaco 1982. The full Grand Prix programme of the time is embedded below. Underneath it, to whet your appetites for the action in Yeongam this weekend, are links to short and extended highlights of Alonso's momentous victory in last year's inaugural Korean Grand Prix.

Moto GP

The day clearly belonged to one driver and one driver only - Casey Stoner. The main Aussie of the Moto GP show silenced all his critics. Unusually for the 21 year old team Ducati rider he had a bad start. Slipping down the order to seventh position. This never seemed to phase the guy aptly described as "a genius" by his project manager Livio Suppo. Instead of tip-toeing around the drenched circuit and waiting for things to unfold ahead of him, Stoner went ahead and in the next 3 laps worked his way up to third place. By halfway through the race he'd passed the race leader Colin Edwards (who had led the race from pole position up to that point) and from there on in he never looked in the slightest discomfort with riding in the changing conditions, changing conditions because the track had started drying out to the point that a clear dry racing line had formed on the track.

Chris Vermeulen (are the Aussies taking over?) had to repay his team because he had crashed his bike 3 times over the weekend, so finishing 3rd was good enough for him. Having started way back in 12th position he had an excellent start and managed to pass Valentino Rossi in the closing stages of the race. Rossi brought his bike in to 4th place to at least keep the fight for the championship between himself and Stoner more than alive. Rossi had a difficult race firstly not having the pace of Casey Stoner and also tearing his tyres up in the latter half of the race due to the track drying out.

John Hopkins caught Rossi at the end but couldn't put in a decent passing move on the 7 times Donington winner so had to settle for 5th.

The rest of the top 10 finishers were Randy de Puniet on his Kawasaki in 6th, still recovering from his knee surgery. Alex Barros passed Dani Pedrosa for 7th place on the last lap of the race. Pedrosa started well on his Honda but slipped down the order and seemed a bit easy for the other riders to get past. Behind Dani Pedrosa were Alex Hoffman and Marco Melandri, with Melandri seeming to have made an incorrect tyre choice since he came to the party in the latter stages as the track dried out.

Yamaha FZR WaveRunner

When speaking of a jet ski that can offer all-world purpose and versatility, you can’t go wrong with a Yamaha FZR Waverunner.

Aggressive and dominating, the FZR is one jet ski that has no problem being pushed to the limit. Its stature as the reigning National Tour Champion doesn’t beg any questions. It’s the ultimate jetski that comes with precision engineering and is powered by the largest displacement engine ever created for a personal watercraft, delivering energetic acceleration and top speed.

The FZR WaveRunner features the industry?s first and only nanotechnology-engineered hulls, decks, and liners, considered to be the lightest and strongest in the market today. The edge-to-edge inside-lean that it possesses greatly compliments its comfortable two-piece seat configuration, while the adjustable trim control allows the rider to dial in the ride of the craft just the way they want it. In addition, the unique telescopic steering allows for effortless switching between a lean-forward attack position and a stand-up riding style. The result is a state of the art watercraft that’s not only quick and nimble, but also offers balance and maneuverability.

The NanoXcell hull is combined with a supercharged 1812cc engine that packs plenty of power and thrust. It’s no secret why the FZR WaveRunner comes with the largest displacement in the industry. And when you combine that with a throttle by wire reverse system that controls RPM in reverse gear and produces maximum thrust efficiency, then you have a watercraft whose reputation certainly does justice to all the hype surrounding it.

Find out more about the Yamaha FZR WaveRunner after the jump.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG

Yes, it's a tired trope. But if there's a pair of well-off empty-nesters, the husband drives a Mercedes-Benz SL and the wife has an SLK. Stereotypes become stereotypes for a reason: As often as not, they're true.

But to dismiss this latest SLK as yet another Executive Assistant-spec coupe/cabrio is to miss three important letters on the boot: A, M and G. Yet again, the crew from Affalterbach have butched up the smallest offering in the Benz lineup, taking the proverbial velvet hammer to the "Chick Car" cliche. The rear wheels of the 2012 SLK55 AMG are driven by V8 power and its brakes and suspension bits have been beefed up for the occasional back road bonanza or high-speed highway assault. And unlike the BMW Z4 that's simply begging for the M treatment, Mercedes actually has die Hoden to build a testosterone-infused droptop. And we can't thank them enough.

Report: Ford and General Motors rivalry gets sharper

Thanks to the humbling experience of the automotive bailout, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have projected an air of amiable competitiveness over the past few years. That era may be coming to a close, however.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Ford and GM may be stoking one of the automotive industry's greatest rivalries once again. Executives within both companies have taken pot shots at their competitors over the past few months with GM CEO Dan Akerson insinuating that Lincoln, Ford's luxury arm, wasn't long for this world. Jim Farley, the head of marketing for Ford, meanwhile, let loose a torrent of vitriol toward GM in the book Once Upon A Car by Bill Vlasic, saying he hated GM and all that the company stands for.

These pot shots may be indicative of growing weariness by both automakers. GM has carved out larger profits and greater market share than Ford over the past few months, and The Wall Street Journal reports that Ford now considers GM it's largest threat. Previously, Ford has eyed Toyota as its largest competitor.

Lewis Hamilton centre stage in F1's Indian adventure

The Indian Grand Prix was not the thrilling spectacle Formula 1 wanted it to be but if that amazing country is to succumb to the sport's advances after this inaugural race at least it won't be under false pretences.

The packed grandstands - unusual for a first race in a new territory for F1 - witnessed a grand prix that encapsulated in many ways what F1 2011 has all been about.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel strolled to a comfortable victory, taking only as much out of his car and tyres as he needed to. Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso - the other two stand-out drivers of the year - followed him home. And Lewis Hamilton found himself embroiled in yet another contretemps with his nemesis, Felipe Massa.

Hamilton, as has been well documented, has not had a great year. There have been some fantastic highs but by and large he has performed well below his superlative best.

On the way, he has been involved in some high-profile incidents, many of which have been his fault. But his collision with Massa in India on Sunday was not one of them.

As Hamilton's McLaren edged alongside the Brazilian's Ferrari into Turn Five on lap 24, it looked as if the Englishman was poised to pull off one of the great overtaking moves for which he is rightly famous. Instead, Massa turned in as if Hamilton was not there, and their races were ruined on the spot.

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions. If you're reading via RSS, you'll need to visit the blog to access this content.

Hamilton has had so many penalties from race officials this year that it was perhaps no surprise that up in the commentary box Martin Brundle said he thought this might lead to another one.

But it became clear from replays that this time it was not Hamilton's fault.

He was virtually completely alongside Massa as they neared the brief braking zone and he was still halfway alongside when they collided despite - as he said afterwards - trying to pull out of the move when he realised Massa was not going to give way.

Massa could be seen looking in his mirrors a number of times, and made it clear after the race that he knew the McLaren was there. But he felt he was in the right because - as he put it - he "could not see" Hamilton as he turned in. As the stewards decided, though, Hamilton was far enough alongside to have a go - and Massa should have given him more room.

The only question you can ask about Hamilton's manoeuvre was why he chose to go for the move there.

The spot he chose is not, as Brundle and fellow commentator David Coulthard pointed out, exactly an easy passing place. With his speed advantage, and knowing that - because of their history this year - Massa was unlikely to be accommodating, it would have been less risky to try the move at the end of the long straight.

For Hamilton, the collision was especially bad news. While he had struggled in the first stint of the race, he was at this stage looking like he might have a shot at a podium finish.

On his second set of tyres, he was demonstrating good speed and, had he managed to pass Massa, he may well have been able to catch Alonso, too. That would have given him third place, assuming he, like the Spaniard, had been able to leapfrog Mark Webber's Red Bull at the second stops.

As it was, it was another weekend to forget for Hamilton, who was downcast after the race.

His father, Anthony, confirmed on Sunday what many in F1 have long suspected - that Hamilton simply wants 2011 to end and to move on to next season.

Hamilton seems to think he has identified the personal issues that have clearly affected him this year. He talked on Saturday about removing all unnecessary distractions and focusing completely on his job. For his own sake - as well as the global audience of millions for whom his aggressive, attacking style is so attractive - one has to hope it works.

The Hamilton-Massa incident provided a controversial distraction in an otherwise largely uneventful race, one of the least interesting of a year that, despite Vettel's domination, has so far generally delivered a fine spectacle.

That was a shame for the one grand prix with which F1 really wanted to make an impact. Nevertheless, while it remains to be seen whether India takes to the sport, the initial signs were good.

There were teething problems in terms of the organisation and track but these were nothing compared with the terrible problems around the Commonwealth Games last year. So despite the tight deadlines, India has now proved that it is more than capable of preparing for and hosting a major international sporting event.

The track was cleverly situated close enough to Delhi to make it accessible. And although the ticket prices were always going to be out of reach of the average Indian, they were clearly affordable to enough people to make attending the race an attractive proposition.

The result was virtually full grandstands - according to official figures, 95,000 people packed into the Buddh International Circuit on Sunday.

That is already a massive step forward from other 'new' races such as those in China, Turkey and, more recently, South Korea. In all those places - and others - F1 appears to have made virtually no impression at all, to the point that many within the sport privately question why the races exist.

Senior figures in F1 were unanimous in their praise for the work done by the Indian organisers. But that is to be expected - they are all desperate for this race to succeed in the world's second most populous country with one of the fastest growing economies.

Perhaps more telling was that the drivers were also effusive - not only about the flowing, challenging layout of the track, which Hamilton said was already one of his favourites, but also for the experience they had had there on what, for most of them, was their first visit.

"There was a big crowd and it was a big success for India," said HRT driver Narain Karthikeyan, the country's first F1 driver. "Having a high-profile event like this gives the country a boost. We are passionate people, we are happy with what we have and it is fantastic to have F1 here."

India has its share of problems - that is well known. Equally, though, if you spend any time there, it is difficult not to fall under its complicated, captivating spell.

After a debut that was unanimously hailed as a success, F1 is hoping that India will come to feel the same way about its new arrival.

Video: 1962 Cadillac vs. 2002 Cadillac in head-on collision

Two years ago, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety celebrated its fiftieth anniversary by taping the offset frontal crash of a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air into a 2009 Chevy Malibu. The Bel Air did not handle it well. The Speed TV show Stuntbusters, which airs on Tuesdays and "explores motoring myths behind the latest automotive technology," did the same with two Cadillacs.

The show parked a 1962 Cadillac Sedan de Ville a mile from a 2002 Deville and ran them into each other, head-on, at 50 miles per hour. Enthusiasts are constantly complaining about how big and heavy cars have become, but you do not want to be in a crash while driving a car that predates modern passive safety innovations. For a reminder why, there's a video after the jump.
