McLaren conjure up surprise speed

In Melbourne

McLaren are renowned for their ability to get themselves out of trouble with feverish car development but the Formula 1 community are wondering if they can pull off their biggest Houdini act yet at the Australian Grand Prix.

After three winter tests where they struggled for reliability and pace, McLaren marched to the top of the timesheets as Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton set the fastest times on the opening day of practice at the first race of the season.

McLaren personnel were seen arriving at Melbourne airport laden with boxes and boxes of new parts as the English team instigated a major overhaul of the lagging MP4-26.

The team decided to abandon their innovative but unreliable 'octopus' exhaust system - where the idea was to blow air across the floor with multiple exhaust exits - and install a regular exhaust with a new floor and front wing.

Team boss Martin Whitmarsh described the modifications as "risky" but predicted the gamble could garner a second in pace to help close the gap on pre-season front-runners Red Bull and Ferrari.

As twilight fell on the first day of 2011 season, the McLarens held sway at the top of the timings, with leader Button bettering Fernando Alonso's Ferrari by 0.147 seconds and Red Bull's champion Sebastian Vettel by 0.160secs.

There was every sign - not to mention a ripple of surprise in the paddock - that McLaren's gamble had paid off.

"It's encouraging and a step in the right direction," a tired but pleased Whitmarsh told BBC Sport.

"The truth is we had a variety of creative exhaust systems and we got some good performance. But we didn't have something that was sufficiently durable in my view, which is why I said to the engineers: 'Let's get something that can be solid and can deliver.' And that's what we chose to do. We needed something reliable that would perform here at the race.

"Everyone has worked hard to get the package here in 10 days flat."

Button also pointed to another encouraging first for McLaren - a car that was capable of completing a race distance, something the team were not able to achieve in testing.

"We've got reliability, which is something we haven't had all winter," Button, who is chasing a third straight win in Melbourne, explained.

"To have a car that can run for as many laps as we want to is great.

"Whatever we'd have done in testing we still wouldn't have been running quickest even if other cars had run on high fuel so I'm very happy with the step we've made."

Top times may be one thing but they do not tell the whole story in F1 - especially in practice when it is not known how much fuel each team has on board. The fact that the teams are still feeling their way with the new Pirelli tyres in the environment of a race weekend adds a further layer of uncertainty.

Tyre management and strategy will be crucial to determining the outcome of races this season as the Pirellis are not only degrading quickly but there is a great performance differential between the compounds.

But McLaren felt they could draw on another positive here, saying they were comfortable with the tyre performance even on Melbourne's bumpy and dusty temporary track.

Ferrari also said they had experienced "less obvious tyre degradation" while in contrast Red Bull's hard tyres were visibly worn during six-lap stints in first practice.

"I've got to say our guys really held the tyres together and exceeded expectations in durability and performance over long runs," added Whitmarsh.

While there are smiles all round at McLaren - even from former boss Ron Dennis, who is keeping his watchful eyes on proceedings - no one is getting carried away.

"It was an encouraging day," commented Whitmarsh. "All we are trying to do is keep our feet on the ground."

Many F1 insiders believe that neither Red Bull nor Ferrari have yet to unleash their true pace in qualifying trim.

Like the great white sharks lurking in Australian water, last season's top predators could well be circling their prey before launching an attack in qualifying.

But if McLaren have sharpened their teeth and taken a genuine step forward in time for the first grand prix then any already hotly-anticipated F1 opener has now got even hotter.

"Enjoy The Ride" PSA - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Remember the Embrace Life PSA that urged auto occupants to use their safety belts? It's a beautiful safety ad with a very powerful message. The Road Safety Council of Western Australia must have been watching, because they've taken their safety message to the next level of serenity.

Beyond the jump is a three-minute ad titled "Enjoy The Ride." The first two minutes of the video explain how important it is to slow down in every day life. If you don't, the PSA explains, you're on the fast track to early aging, heart disease and even erectile dysfunction. You wouldn't know this is an auto safety spot until the last minute of the PSA, when the real message reveals itself. Slow down and enjoy the ride. Hit the jump to view the video - just be prepared to breath a little deeper... you may want to join yoga after this. Hat tip to Chris!

Thor trailer - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Get ready for Marvel Comics and Paramount Pictures to rule commercial time leading up to their new Thor movie that premiers on May 6. The film, which will be followed up with Captain America later this summer, follows two Iron Man movies and the 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Those films make up the lengthy run-up to the release of The Avengers movie next summer that will feature all the good guys on one silver screen.

Predictably, Thor will be jammed with corporate sponsors and product placements, which will lead to still more Thor commercials. Even Acura has gotten in on the act, as the upscale Honda brand has nabbed the roll as the vehicle of choice for the good guys at S.H.I.E.L.D., who are working hard to get all the superheros on the same team (hello, Avengers). Acura, whose corporate styling language already involves the shield-shaped front fascia that so many have complained about, were more interested in the role due to S.H.I.E.L.D's high-tech, cutting edge reputation. The automaker will reportedly receive an amazing two minutes of air time during the movie, and Acura even allowed the bad guys to blow up some of its vehicles.

Acura no doubt paid big bucks to get all that screen time, but that's not all it plans to do. Variety reports that Acura will push the movie in commercials, while also hosting Thor events at local dealerships that include giving away some tickets for advanced screenings. Hit the jump to watch the latest movie trailer. Top tip, Stewie!

Report: Toyota Yaris plant to be shuttered for at least another month

2011 Toyota Yaris five-door liftback

Production issues in Japan continue three weeks after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami devastated the island nation. Major Japanese automakers have consistently pushed back plant start-up times and Toyota is no different, with a current forecast of an April 11 or April 14 re-boot. And that's best-case scenario. The automaker said in a statement Tuesday that it was looking into supply issues, adding "depending on vehicle type, there may be a significant impact on our production capabilities."

Automotive News reports that the longest wait time could be for Toyota's Miyagi assembly plant, which makes the Yaris subcompact. Sources tell AN that the plant will likely be down for at least a month, as ruptured gas lines in the facility link to a heavily damaged natural gas plant in the quake-devastated region of Sendai. The automaker is said to be looking at other options to power the otherwise repaired facility. The prolonged shutdown at the Miyagi plant could ultimately affect Toyota's U.S. supply of Yaris models, which only come from that plant.

One factory that has been revitalized is the plant that makes the Prius, Lexus CT 200h and Lexus HS250h. But a source apparently informed AN that a Toyota purchasing executive admits that the facility is only running at half capacity.

Right now, the situation in Japan hasn't had much affect on U.S. vehicle availability, but a prolonged shutdown of supplier plants could be devastating. IHS Global Insight estimates that 30 percent of the world's global auto production could be lost if Japan plants remain closed for six weeks or more.

Five Things to Look For at the Toronto Supercross

Round 12 of Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship, is set to get underway Saturday in Toronto. Last weekend's race in Jacksonville was run under not just a full moon, but a "super" moon. It was closest the moon had been to the earth in nearly 20 years.

And the night's activities on the track showed it! The top two in the series point standings at the start of the day had disastrous nights! Series points leader Ryan Villopoto didn't even qualify for the Main Event, because of two crashes in the LCQ. And number two in points at the time, James Stewart's Main Event lasted about 10 seconds until a crash, of which he did not re-enter the race.

That left the door wide open for other title contenders to put themselves in a prime position.

The 250 East Supercross Lites class was not exempt from the lunacy either. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Blake Baggett, who stood second in points behind GEICO Honda's Justin Barcia, failed to qualify for the East Main Event. What a season 2011 has been! After all the excitement to this point, what more can we possibly expect in Toronto?

Here are a few things I see going down at Saturday's Supercross:

F1 teams battle over cost-cutting

The first race of the 2011 season is still two months away, but the fight for a competitive advantage in Formula 1 is still raging away behind the scenes.

As their engineers put the finishing touches to their new cars in time for the start of pre-season testing next month, team bosses are trying to thrash out a new cost-saving agreement. And it's getting a bit nasty.

Rivals - almost without exception, I'm told - believe Red Bull exceeded en route to winning the world title last year the limitations laid out in the document that defines how teams commit their budgets. They also claim that Red Bull are blocking a new version of the so-called Resource Restriction Agreement to take the sport through to 2017, where the current one runs only to 2012.

One insider at a rival team said Red Bull had been "flouting" the RRA. This is quite a serious accusation, as it effectively claims Red Bull either spent longer developing the aerodynamics of their car, employed more staff, or spent more money - or all three - than they were allowed to. In other words, they had an unfair advantage.

Red Bull deny outright that they overspent in 2010, and insist they are objecting to the revised agreement only because it is flawed in its current form and they want to ensure it is "fair and equitable". More of which in a moment.

"We've worked in accordance with the RRA limits since they were introduced," Red Bull team principal Christian Horner told BBC Sport. "With tremendous hard work and internal efficiencies, we believe we've absolutely adhered to it.

"Red Bull has committed its budgets wisely and it's obviously surprising that people will feel that way, but it's inevitable, I guess, when you're at the front and winning races."

No one will go on the record to confirm their suspicions about Red Bull, but Virgin Racing chief executive officer Graeme Lowdon, while making it clear he does not know about Red Bull's budget, says: "On something as fundamental as this, on something that's there to make the whole business you're in sustainable, if someone was to even breach the spirit of that, then that's extremely disappointing.

"I cannot see how anyone can level a criticism at an RRA. If it made a worse show, or watered it down, then there would be a case to answer. But it doesn't so it's very disappointing if teams ignore something as fundamental as this."

In many ways, this financial dispute echoes the technical rows that enveloped Red Bull in 2010.

Unable to explain or understand how the RB6 car was so fast, rivals first accused Red Bull of having an illegal ride-height control system, and then of an overly flexible front wing. Red Bull insisted the car was completely legal, and the FIA, F1's governing body, never found otherwise.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner

"We expect other teams to potentially challenge [whether we have over-spent]," Horner says, "as they have done on front wings and ride heights and everything else in the course of last year. But we don't have any issue.

"Red Bull probably has the third or fourth biggest budget in F1. We spent prudently and have achieved great efficiency within the factory, and we have to top that in 2011."

This row has come up in the context of negotiations over revising ways of controlling F1's costs. Keeping a lid on budgets is, along with ensuring the racing remains as good as possible, one of the central themes for F1 stake-holders at the moment, as the sport's bosses seek to ensure it remains both compelling for its audience and affordable for its competitors in a difficult economic climate.

The RRA is the document the teams drew up in 2009 to control costs in F1. It defines a series of limitations on resources, getting stricter through 2010, 2011 and 2012, and the penalties for exceeding them. But it was always meant as a stepping-stone to a longer agreement.

In the current agreement, there is a sliding scale of penalties covering the following main areas of resource commitment:

  • Aerodynamic development, measured in wind-tunnel hours or computational fluid dynamics data, with the more you do of one, up to a given limit, meaning the less you can do of the other;
  • Total staff numbers, from 350 in 2010 down to 280 in 2011, and total external spend, from 40m Euros in 2010, down to 20m Euros in 2011, with the more you commit to one, the less you can spend on the other.

The penalties were based on a sliding scale. For example, a breach of up to 5% is punished by having that same amount taken off your resource allocation for the next year; a breach of 5-10% means having 1.1 times that amount taken off; and so on.

The new document - the fundamentals of which were largely agreed at a meeting at the Singapore Grand Prix last September - changes that.

One team principal, who did not wish to be identified, said that the new RRA relaxes the restrictions on resources - teams can spend a bit more money and employ a few more staff - and in return the policing is stricter, both in terms of how teams' spending is analysed and the penalties for exceeding the limits.

But the detail is proving problematic, with Red Bull in particular unhappy about the new document as it stands.

Horner says his objections are rooted in ensuring the new RRA, which would run until 2017, does what it is intended to do.

"The RRA is a positive thing for F1," he says. "I think a solution can be found for the outstanding issues, it just needs some sensible discussion between the teams, because the thought of an unrestricted spend in F1 is unpalatable for all the teams.

"So it is a matter of achieving transparency and a fair and equitable system between all independent and manufacturer-owned teams so that no party is at an advantage or disadvantage."

"The resource restriction needs to be sorted quite quickly because at the moment it is unclear what rules we are working to in 2011 in many respects, so it's important a solution is found and I think one will be found."

The trouble with rolling out a new car is that it instantly makes its stablemates look outdated. That's especially the case with a company like Lamborghini that only has two model lines. But there's nothing to do about it but soldier on with new models to continue the cycle. So, now that the new Aventador is upon us, details are beginning to surface on the replacement for the Gallardo.

Introduced back in 2003 and incrementally updated every step along the way, the Gallardo is due for replacement, and as we reported earlier, that replacement is tipped to be called Cabrera. Expect composite construction (as employed on the Sesto Elemento and the Aventador) to help reduce the car's weight, while a new version of the Gallardo's V10 engine could boost output up to 600 metric horsepower.

Rumor has it that a supercharger could be employed, but with only around 30 horsepower of tuning to do to reach 600 - not to mention a range-topping 700-horse Aventador from which to keep its distance - we doubt Sant'Agata would need forced induction to get there. Expect the tentatively-dubbed Cabrera LP600-4 to debut sometime next year.

Former Champ Car champ Sebastien Bourdais returns to Indy racing [Spoilers]

Following earlier reports and a couple of test sessions, four-time Champ Car champion Sebastien Bourdais is returning to open wheel racing in America with the Dale Coyne team. The French driver had graduated to an unsuccessful stint in Formula One with Scuderia Toro Rosso after dominating the Champ Car series in its pre-merger days, and is returning to IndyCar racing this season.

The deal with Coyne will see Bourdais campaign only the street and road-course races on the calendar, and not the oval speedways - less due to his relative expertise in the corners as opposed to banked tracks and more, according to reports, to avoid scheduling conflicts with his drive for Peugeot's Le Mans team.

Bourdais' return kicked off this past weekend at the season opener in St Petersburg, Florida, however he didn't make it onto the starting grid. The experienced grand prix driver crashed his Dallara in the first chicane during a warm-up session, resulting in heavy damage. After his teammate James Jakes crashed around the same time at Turn Three and the team was left without a back-up car, it had only enough parts to repair one chassis and Jakes' was the less damaged of the two.

We'll look forward to seeing Bourdais get his groove back at the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park on April 10, followed by Long Beach on April 17 and Sao Paulo, Brazil, on May 1 before the series hits the speedways in June.

Rolls-Royce opens its largest showroom yet in Abu Dhabi

The news these days from the Middle East mostly focuses on warfare and revolution, but not in Abu Dhabi. The gulf emirate remains an island of tranquility, and that's where Rolls-Royce has opted to open its largest showroom ever.

The dealership includes some 900 square meters of showroom space - that's nearly 10,000 square feet - incorporating a coffee bar, a customer configuration lounge and enough floorspace to showcase five vehicles in uncluttered opulence. Which is really something, considering that the company currently offers only four variants across two model ranges. There's a service facility adjacent as well. The new Abu Dhabi location is the 82nd in an expanding chain of Rolls-Royce dealers around the world, and the eighth in the Middle East alone.

BMW shopping for a new ad agency. Oh, Joy!

BMW Joy is youthful campaign ad

BMW of North America is beginning a review for its $150 million U.S. ad account, the company said on Monday. The decision comes after a tumultuous six months for the company, having lost its long-time marketing executive, Jack Pitney,to a tragic accident last October and then parting with its former agency last Fall.

BMW is in the midst of an aggressive product onslaught in the next two years as the Munich-based company is trying to grow its business globally, as well as in the States.

The company had used GSD&M, an Austin, Texas-based ad shop until last November. Since then, it has been getting ad work from Kirshenbaum, Bond Senecal + Partners, NY, which created BMW's Super Bowl ads this year. Kirshenbaum had been the runner-up to GSD&M when BMW last reviewed its ad account in 2005, and had been doing the company's CRM work the last five years as well.

BMW's ad work has been the subject of much chatter and even controversy in the last year or so as the company played down its long-running "Ultimate Driving Machine" positioning in favor of a "Joy of Driving" idea. The "Joy," positioning is closer to the BMW brand strategy around the world, as the idea translates into most languages. "Ultimate Driving Machine" apparently doesn't translate into most languages.

BMW sales are holding up in the recession. The company was the number-two luxe brand in 2010, just ahead of Mercedes-Benz and just behind Lexus. But the company has been spending more on price discounts channeled into lease deals and financing discounts.

There are a number of ad shops likely to get a look: Kirshenbaum, Bond Senecal to retain it; The Martin Agency, Richmond, Va.; BBDO, NY (Creative chief David Lubars was creative director at Fallon Worldwide when that agency had the business and created BMW Films, among other great work for the carmaker); Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Miami; and Publicis, NY.

Ford details its rigorous pothole testing techniques

Ford suspension testing - Click above for high-res image gallery

Despite increased government expenditures in England to fix the country's potholes, Ford is eager to prove it still rigorously tests its cars for their ability to withstand big pavement gaps. According to Ford, its cars go through thousands of miles of tests across two proving grounds to make sure they won't sustain damage when presented with uneven surfaces.

The Lommel Proving Ground in Belgium goes as far as to include an inch-by-inch recreation of a notoriously porous English road. More abusive road surfaces are simulated at Ford's Dunton Proving Ground in Essex, England. Ford says that between the two test facilities, it tests every wheel and tire combination sold on its entire European vehicle portfolio.

The budget for this sort of testing is huge, as each test car is strapped with around $2.5 million worth of electronic gadgetry designed to register and record the effect of each pothole strike. Ford uses the data to improve its current suspension systems and design new ones, which will go on to be further refined at Lommel and Dunton.

Report: Angry Chinese driver tows Range Rover back to dealer with donkeys

Range Rover towed by Donkeys

A man in Shenyang, China was reportedly so frustrated with his 2010 Land Rover Range Rover breaking down that he towed it back to the dealer and asked for a full refund. To add a little insult to his heady request, the spurned owner towed the stricken SUV with a pair of donkeys.

Apparently the guy paid ¥2 million (about $304,000) for the English SUV in 2010. Since the purchase, the car reportedly broke down six times and eventually needed a new engine. When it died a seventh time, the owner was apparently at wit's end. The stunt managed to hammer the point home in a much less destructive manner than a certain Lamborghini owner recently chose. According to Asian auto news outlet TheTycho, the doubtlessly dumbfounded dealer refused to give the customer a refund.

Video: Camaro ZL1 gets seen, heard by Motor Trend

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1
2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 - Click above to watch the video (Warning: Auto play)

Chevrolet
has called the Ford Mustang franchise's Boss 302 and Shelby GT500 and raised the stakes by one supercharger. The obvious aim of the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is to silence all the critics who flame the Camaro for being slower than the 5.0-liter competition from Ford.

To cure their case of horsepower envy, Chevrolet threw a supercharged 6.2-liter LSA making more than 550 horsepower between the Camaro's fenders. That power theoretically puts it atop even the mighty GT500 in a straight line.

To make sure the Camaro could take down the handling-oriented Boss 302 as well, they cribbed the magnetic dampers from the Corvette ZR1 for the ZL1. All that effort should add up to not only the fastest Camaro ever built, but the best-handling, as well. We can't wait to get our mitts on the car, but in the meantime, we'll slake our curiosity by hearing the LSA briefly come to life in the video after the jump (Warning: Auto play).
