Exclusive: Volkswagen seriously considering Amarok pickup for Canada

2012 Volkswagen Amarok - front three-quarter view, white

Full-size pickups continue to rule the sales roost in North America, and there frankly hasn't been much action in the small and midsize segment to generate new interest. Ford finally put its Ranger out to pasture, the Ram Dakota is gone and a Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon replacement has a ways to go before it hits the market. The category's remaining imports - Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier and Honda Ridgeline - aren't exactly fresh, and the long-promised Mahindra model hasn't exactly worked out. But surely there still has to be a market for a smaller, fully modern pickup, right?

"Bottom line? We are very interested, but are proceeding very slowly and very cautiously."

Apparently Volkswagen thinks there might be. Autoblog has learned that VW is seriously investigating selling its handsome Amarok pickup in Canada. According to Thomas Tetzlaff, Media Relations Manager at VW of Canada, the German automaker is "presently in the 'evaluation stage,' where we are pouring over data with a fine-toothed comb. Bottom line? We are very interested, but are proceeding very slowly and very cautiously."

Thanks to a number of tipsters, Autoblog has discovered that VWoC is actively discussing the Amarok with its dealer body, which in turn has been gauging customer interest in the truck. Tetzlaff confirms: "Yes, we have had discussions with our dealers and they have given us some very positive feedback. The challenge is to justify the project 'on our own'." Past history suggests that VW's Canadian arm is up to the challenge - as recently as 2009, VWoC offered the Golf and Jetta City models without an equivalent U.S. model.

This suggests that VW is considering importing a TDI diesel model.

Tetzlaff would not confirm which cab styles and powertrain options are under consideration, but he did say, "The powertrain solution would certainly give Canadian buyers a real alternative in the light pickup market." This suggests that VW is considering importing a TDI diesel model. At present, VW builds the Amarok with one of three diesel powertrains in Argentina, offering 138-177 horsepower and 250-310 pound-feet of torque. The Amarok is assembled in both single and double-cab configurations with either rear- or four-wheel drive and is sold in South America, Europe, Russia, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

While sounding optimistic about the Amarok's chances, Tetzlaff cautioned, "Our desire to bring such a product to market needs to be balanced with a strong business case. The costs we would need to incur in order to import the vehicle need to be factored into the equation and they are not insubstantial... the project is nowhere near a 'green light' just yet."

And what about here in the States? VW spokesman Mark Gillies: "VW of America has absolutely no plans to sell the current version of the Amarok in the U.S."

Dictators throughout history and the cars they loved

Kim Jong-Il's funeral procession

With Sacha Baron Cohen's latest movie, The Dictator, raking in box office millions, our friends at Hagerty Insurance have compiled a list of the Top 10 Dictator Car Guys. While we're familiar with the automotive fancies of some foreign rulers - like Kim Jong-Il, whose funeral was something of a classic car parade - this list digs deep into the annals of totalitarianism.

It's no surprise that among these powerful men, exotics from the likes of Ferrari were highly esteemed. What's more shocking is just how brutal some of these guys were. If you haven't cracked a history book in some years, consider this your impetus to at least read the Wikipedia entry for El Jefe.

So what was Sacha Baron Cohen's pick for his character's dictatorial ride? A parade of gold Dartz SUVs, of course. you can read the full article at Hagerty's website.

25 Years of World Superbike: Roger Burnett

Roger Burnett

Recently inducted into the SBK Hall of Fame Roger Burnett was the first rider ever to score a pole position, at the opening round at his home circuit of Donington way back in 1988. He has, as rider, team consultant, rider manager and PR guru been part of SBK history almost every step of the way. With the memories of an epic Donington SBK weekend in 2012 permanently etched in the mind of all who were there to see it unfold, what better time to get the thoughts of an ‘old-time’ British ex-rider who still takes a keen interest in the modern day SBK paddock.

Q: How was the championship in the early years? Did you know it was going to be such a success?
A: I think there was a real excitement that global four-stroke racing was going to be on proper GP short circuits. Prior to SBK starting four-stroke racing was all about TT-F1, which took into consideration road tracks. So what we all got excited about was that and the fact that that it was going to be a full World championship of 12 rounds, with two races per event. That formula, back 25 years ago, was ahead of its day. Now MotoGP has had to go four-stroke so SBK was ahead. The formula of two races gives a fantastic day of entertainment, whether for the TV viewer of live spectator. Add in that the whole formula was production based, and therefore could be a real shop window or the manufacturers. That made it a brilliant, exciting, concept.

Q: How strong was the bond between racing and production machines?
A: The manufacturers joined in, with the first year of the Honda RC30 in 1988 a production-based model that we raced, then the Yamaha OW01 was in its infancy, so the manufacturers had models to promote and display – and hone into becoming better roadgoing products. I always understood in my racing career that I was privileged to be able to race bikes and the only reason I could do that I that people bought them for the road. So to be involved in the concept and initiation in a world championship that gave the roadbike audience something back was exciting and a real privilege. I absolutely love the Superbike World Championship and I love the people. There are people in there who have been there for 25 years. Racing is competition and with competition there can be a little bit of bitchiness from time-to-time, but generally speaking the camaraderie in the paddock and the atmosphere is so much better than the MotoGP paddock.

Q: Do you have any strong memories of those first races?
A: What was really surprising that Ducati wheeled out this bloody great big red thing in the first rounds; so noisy you could not believe it. Then Marco Lucchinelli jumps on it – and he was a god really. I do not know how old he is but in 1988 he was already pushing a decent age and he was a seasoned kind of racer. That Ducati was so good and it came from nowhere. Nobody anticipated that Ducati would have such a strong product for that championship from year one. And what has been proven is that they have had a strong, competitive product for the whole 25 years, which has been unbelievable.

Q: You did a lot of travelling in the early years, lots of fly-away rounds, so it must have been difficult to do all that even without the huge numbers of people in a modern-day SBK team?
A: We used to do a lot of it ourselves. Steve Parrish and I were always mates and when we did the back-to-back Canadian and American rounds we kind of shared travel together – because Steve was always good at organising and so on. We would freight the bikes over there, fly in from Europe, collect our bikes from the freight depot in a Ryder hire-truck, put our kit bikes into it at the other end – we did it ourselves with a forklift – and then drove to the first race. After that round we would re-pack the crate and drive down to America to the next round! In those days, across two teams, we had ten people – including the riders!

GEICO Honda team adds Zach Osborne to its 2013 roster

GEICO Honda's 2013 AMA Supercross and Motocross roster is starting to take shape with the addition of Zach Osborne to its Lites lineup.

Osborne, a Virginia native, made a splash in Supercross during the 2012 season when he finished on the podium twice racing while in the first four rounds of the Lites West series. He then left for Europe to race in the FIM MX World Championship.

"I get to join the team in October and start preparing for 2013," Osborne said. "I'm super-excited about it. It's an awesome opportunity for me to be a part of such a great team like GEICO Honda. I got a decent taste of Supercross this year, but it's good to know I'm going home to race full time and make a real run at a championship."

2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Series Preview

2012 has been a strange year in the world of professional Supercross and motocross racing. Last season was epic in many respects, where each series, both indoors and out, provided enough tension and excitement to hold everyone over for a while. We still find ourselves thinking about the weekly battles that ensued in the 2011 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series amongst five of the best riders to ever throw a leg over a dirt bike (Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, James Stewart, Chad Reed, and Trey Canard). Even though the racing was unscripted, it was more polished and enthralling than a WWE match could ever hope to be. When the riders headed outdoors, the racing continued to deliver.

Contrast 2011’s highs on top of highs, and this season has so far been awash with disappoint, dissatisfaction, and injuries, injuries, injuries. Even Villopoto, this year’s Supercross Class champ, is already out for the rest of the year with a torn ACL. Both Canard and Reed are also out for the rest of the year, while Dungey suffered a broken collarbone midway through SX (which he has since recovered from), and Stewart had enough crashes to last a lifetime. But, there is light on the horizon.

There is much more below, but here are some links that can help you with more info:

BMW recalling 7,600 3 Series models over faulty head restraints

2012 BMW 3 Series

BMW is recalling certain 2012 3 Series models for head restraints that can be raised beyond the federal limit. As a result, in a collision, the head rest could move down slightly, increasing the risk of a neck injury. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall covers 7,600 vehicles manufactured between October 18, 2011 and March 18, 2012.

BMW plans to notify owners this month, and dealers will address the problem by installing a small clip to limit the head rest's travel. The work will, of course, be done for free. For more information, head over to the NHTSA website or scroll down or the full recall bulletin.

Reading between the lines in a phoney war

The annual Formula 1 phoney war was in full swing at the second pre-season test at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya this week.

Fernando Alonso was talking down Ferrari's form, Lewis Hamilton was talking up McLaren's - as, intriguingly, was Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel. And the unlikely combination of Kamui Kobayashi and Sauber set the fastest time of the week.

As ever, the headline lap times were a poor guide to the order of the grid that can be expected in Melbourne at the first race in just three weeks' time.

But look behind the fastest laps, and there is usually a way of gleaning at least some sense of form ahead of the season.

Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso's Ferrari could yet to turn out to be a dark horse. Photo: Getty

I'll preface what follows with a major caveat - this has been one of the most difficult tests to read for some time. But here goes.

Red Bull, as ever, looked especially strong. Vettel was fastest of all on the first day of the test, and throughout the four days he and team-mate Mark Webber set consistently formidable-looking times.

On Wednesday afternoon, Vettel and Hamilton set out to do race-distance runs at more or less the same time. Both did 66 laps - the length of the Spanish Grand Prix, which will be held at the track in May.

Vettel did five pit stops; Hamilton four. Discount laps on which they went in and out of the pits and they both managed 55 flying laps. Vettel completed his more than two minutes faster than Hamilton.

If that was repeated in a race, Hamilton would be lapped by the end.

And the pattern was repeated on Thursday with Mark Webber and Jenson Button, although the margin was reduced to about half a minute.

Of course, this is very far from an exact scientific comparison.

They didn't use the same tyres as each other - although they don't necessarily have to in the race either.

We don't know what they were doing with fuel loads - although it would be counter-intuitive to start putting fuel in at pit stops because it would provide the team with data that was never going to be relevant to competition.

And it's an especially confusing situation because only the day before Vettel was saying how impressed he had been with the McLaren's pace on the longer runs.

But there was more - none of it especially happy ready for those hoping for a close season.
On the Wednesday, Vettel's fastest time of all was nearly a second faster than Hamilton's on the same type of tyres. Although both were set on very short runs - suggesting a qualifying-type simulation - that's still potentially meaningless as there is no way of knowing the level of fuel on board at the time.

Nevertheless, if you then look at the lap times both were doing at the start of their race-distance runs, they were about the same margin slower than each driver's fastest laps as you would expect given a full race fuel load.

That suggests that the headline lap times of those two drivers could be a reasonably accurate indicator of form - again worrying for McLaren.

Of course, this is only testing, and teams have updates to put on their cars before the first race - as Button pointed out. And everyone expects McLaren to be a close to challenger at the front come Melbourne. Nevertheless, few are under any illusions about Red Bull's strength.

"You're old enough, Andrew," one senior insider said to me during the test, "to know that Red Bull look very strong. McLaren and Ferrari are a bit behind. Force India look like they have a quick car, too."

He might have added that the new Mercedes looks quite decent as well.

But few teams are as difficult to understand right now as Ferrari - who have not done any race simulations to compare with their main rivals.

The messages coming out of the team have all seemed pretty negative.

There has been a lot of attention put on technical director Pat Fry's remark at the first test in Jerez that Ferrari were "not happy" with their understanding of the car.

Start raking through the time sheets, though, and you begin wonder what's behind all the negativity.

On headline lap times, Alonso was less than 0.3secs behind Vettel. And on both his days he started 10-lap runs with a lap in the region of one minute 24.1 seconds.

If you take 10 laps' worth of fuel off that time, you are left with a lap in the low 1:23sec bracket - again, not far off what Vettel managed. And you can bet the Ferrari was running with more than just 10 laps of fuel anyway; most top teams routinely test with 60-80kg of fuel on board.

In other words, the Ferrari actually looks reasonably fast, and an insider did admit: "The car is not as bad as a lot of people think."

If - and it's a big if - Ferrari can start to extract that potential before the first race of the season, Red Bull might just have a serious fight on their hands. And that's without even considering what McLaren might be able to achieve.

Official: 2013 Ford Fusion configurator powers up

Get ready. The hype machine is revving up for the 2013 Ford Fusion. And it's not going to slow down in the coming months, as Ford prepares to launch it's most important midsize entry in 30 years.

Even with no pricing available, Ford has launched its Build Your Own Fusion website. The configurator will walk a curious customer through all of the variations of the new Fusion from a base S model to the fully loaded Titanium to the gas-electric Hybrid. (The only model missing is the plug-in hybrid Fusion Energi.)

The configurator, which Ford says on the website is for "survey purposes only," will allow you to see the Fusion S in eight different colors (the Titanium model comes in nine - click through our attached gallery to see them all), list out each model's engine choices, features and options, as well continue the buzz the Fusion created at the Detroit Auto Show.

After building the Fusion of your dreams, you can also sign up for email updates, which, over the summer, will be many.

Karel Abraham finished on the 13th place in qualifying practice in Estoril

Karel Abraham

Czech MotoGP Rider Karel Abraham finished in the afternoon qualifying practice on 13th place with his best time 1:38,398. He lost 2,210 sec on the winner Casey Stoner and will start from the 5th row tomorrow.

Karel Abraham
“We were trying a lot new things during the practices today as the chassis set up and also new electronics. It is not an ideal situation so far, but we have to deal with it in some way. It is clear I have problems with breaking and I´m losing there a lot. We will do some changes until tomorrow and we will hopefully finish on points.”

Marco Grana, chief mechanic Cardion AB Motoracing
“Weather conditions were much better today and we were concentrated mainly on breaking.
We tried both bikes with different settings, but the main problem is still there. Karel is too soon on breaks than we want to and it´s visible especially on the long fast straights. Now we are going to try making other changes on the motorbike´s set up and we´ll see what tomorrow brings for us.”

Positive Day at Estoril for Alvaro Bautista

Alvaro Bautista Estoril 2012

Alvaro Bautista picked up another positive result whilst Michele Pirro achieved his objective of bringing the CRT home on a positive day for Team San Carlo Honda Gresini at Estoril. A top six finish for the Spaniard and the Italian's first points of his MotoGP career give the team a timely morale boost ahead of the next race at Le Mans in two weeks' tim

Alvaro Bautista
“It was a tough race. After practice I thought I had the pace to be fighting for fourth place but I didn't have a good feeling for the front and was struggling to turn the bike. It cost me a few valuable tenths that made me lose touch with Dovizioso and Crutchlow. Now we will have a close look at the data and try to understand why this happened, as well as working on our weak point which is braking. Sixth place isn't a bad result but we should have been much closer to the two Yamaha Tech3 bikes. We have a test tomorrow and that will be very useful to us. ”

Michele Pirro
“With eight laps to go I could see on the big screen that Stoner was starting to lap people so I pushed extra hard to the end because I would have been really disappointed to get lapped. I'm happy we made it to the end and I picked up my first points of the season. Today I just tried to stay upright and make the most of what we had underneath us and hopefully in the future we can hope for more than that. I want to thank the team for their hard work here, hopefully we can have some new stuff to work with at Le Mans.”

Fausto Gresini “It has been a good day and to get our best result with Alvaro so far is encouraging. We made progress over the weekend and I think the data we collected today will help us make further progress in future. Our objective is to be fighting with the Yamaha Tech3 bikes and I think we will be doing that soon. I am also happy that we were able to finish the race with Michele on the CRT bike, picking up points and avoiding being lapped. Overall it's been a good weekend that bodes well for the future.”
